Real Estate on the South Shore of Kauai Poipu & Koloa
With year round sunny weather and cool trade winds, Poipu is one of the most premier resort communities on the island. The area also offers clear waters and many white sandy beaches perfect for swimming or getting a nice tan. This beach was recently named America's best beach by the Travel Channel.
Further along you will find Koloa, which is a 200 year old plantation town which contains a collection of old plantation buildings in addition to facade buildings which now serve as souvenir shops and retail stores. This is the site of the oldest sugar plantation in all of Hawaii.
You will not have to worry about the integrity of the buildings - as almost all of them have been restored to meet current building standards. For those that appreciate the historical significance of the area, consider visiting the Koloa History Center, which is a small museum that offers many different seminars and exhibits related to the history of the area.
You can also visit Old Koloa Town Mall, which contains many restaurants and specialty shops. South of the town, you will find the Koloa Landing, which used to be the main port of entry for the entire island, and was used by the Yankee Pacific Fleet.
Unlike many other areas of Hawaii, some of the sugar cane fields around Koloa are still in production, even to this day. Today, the town is home to over 100 businesses, all within a 10 mile walking distance of each other, which makes it great for those that rely on bicycle or foot transportation. Each summer, a giant festival is held to celebrate the heritage of the town.
The south shore of Kauai is rich in the history of the local Hawaiian people. In the south shore of Kauai, there are several places you can visit including Spouting Horn, Old Koloa Town, Koloa Heritage Trail, and Poipu Beach. Unlike other blowholes, it makes a loud sound when the salt water is spurted out into the air. The local legend claims that a large lizard used to swallow up everyone who went there. A man named Liko happened to visit the place. When like was attacked, he found a hole in the lava shelf and swam through it. The lizard that was trapped in the hole groaned because of hunger. The groaning sound is from the lizard that is trapped inside the hole. You can visit the Spouting Horn during sunset to watch the scenery.
