Upcountry Maui is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii. It has many green hills and mountains. Upcountry Maui covers the elevated areas surrounding Haleakala. Many ranches and botanical gardens can be found in upcountry Maui. Most of the visitors who visit upcountry Maui will go to the Haleakala Mountain. It can take one day or more to visit all the tourist attractions in upcountry Maui. If you want to drive to the upcountry, you should start driving from the town of Paia in the north shore.
Upcountry Maui has two towns including Makawao and Kula. Kula is well known for the flowers and vegetable plantations. The upcountry has many fertile fields where crops such as taro and sweet potato are grown. You can take a tour to Kula if you want to observe how the Maui onion is produced. Other fresh ingredients for the Hawaii restaurants are also produced in the farm at the upcountry Maui. Kula can be accessed via the Route 36 highway. Kula only have a few restaurants. The Morihara Store is a grocery store that sells all kinds of general items. Kula Marketplace offers gourmet food such as sandwiches and picnic lunches for tourists. If you want to explore the countryside in Kula, you can take part in horse riding or ATV tour.
While visiting the upcountry, you can explore the town of Makawao. Makawao used to be the home to the paniolo cowboys. The buildings in Makawao have cowboy architecture styles. If you want to explore the local flora and fauna, you can visit the Haleakala National Park. Many years ago, Makawao has a thriving cattle industry. The prominence of Makawao as a cowboy town has wane. Cowboys from different parts of the world come to Makawao to watch the rodeo show on the 4th of July. The storefront in Makawao looks very much like the stores in Maui Plantation. It also look a like the old west building. You will find several restaurants, galleries and shops. Makawao is situated on an elevated land of about 1,400 feet from the sea level. It has a calm weather. It offers fantastic view of the scenery of the north shore in Maui. The weather in the upcountry is warmer than Haiku. However, it is not as hot as Pukalani and Kula. The air in Makawao is always fresh. If you live in Makawao, you can easily travel to the central Maui to find jobs.
