Following the ethnic makeup of the contract laborers brought to settle the islands and work the plantations a century ago, Wahiawa is a community that prides itself on its diversity and its rich history. Celebrating their centennial in 1998, this historic community is host to a number of single-family dwellings. Of late, an influx of military personnel and their families is the primary influence of the neighborhood's nearness to Wheeler Army Airfield as well as Schofield Barracks. The many eateries in the area reflect the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood; restaurants of all varieties are popular, and many of them have been in the area for decades and are popular with people from all points of the island.
Wahiawa State Freshwater State Park is a peaceful and undeveloped area that is engulfed by the Hawaii Country Club Golf Course, which is also available for the use of the denizens of the neighborhood. Children of Wahiawa's residents attend one of the seven elementary schools that are part of the Leilehua Complex school system, and then move on to either Wheeler or Wahiawa Middle School. Students matriculate from Leilehua High School.
