Modern Ewa is a largely residential district that has developed over recent years with the increasing population in Oahu, but was originally a small plantation town which had sugar cane fields as far as the eye could see. The Campbell Industrial Park was the catalyst for the growth of Ewa, attracting factories including petroleum refineries, a cement plant and a steel fabrication plant, and the numerous jobs that came with these factories. To cater to these many folk looking for new homes in the area, a large number of homes have sprung up with both multi-family and single-family projects being built in Soda Creek and Sun Terra. More successful residents can look at the Palm Court and Palm Villa developments which have grassy lawns and a little more space. The Arbors project offers impressive homes with plenty of space, and also offers residents access to swimming pools and recreational centers. There are also condos available in the Sunrise development. The development across the area of Ewa has been significant, and the area is kept neat and tidy by rules and guidelines designed by the Gentry Community Association. This association also runs the Ewa Gentry Community Centre which has a wide range of physical classes available, including karate, yoga, hula and aquatic activities. There are also plenty of community events which bring the community together and help develop the neighbourhood spirit.
One of the very first building projects which was begun in Ewa was that in Soda Creek, and has eight thousand units spread over mainly single family homes and some multi family projects. The area is close to numerous family attractions, including the Kapolei Entertainment Center, Kapolei Shopping Center and the shops at the Kapolei Parkway, which includes a 16 screen cinema, grocery shops, restaurants and video stores. The Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park is also based in this area, and is popular among residents and visitors. The Campbell Complex school district provides the educational facilities in this area, which then send children on to Ilima Intermediate School and Campbell High School.
