Palolo Valley is an older area with several ethnicities living side by side; it stretches the whole depth and width of the valley and has several affordable single family dwellings on the market. One end of the valley is still used for agriculture, namely the farming of orchids and crops. Palolo Valley has a dense population, including a complex providing housing to low income families - this sometimes results in people resisting moving into the neighborhood. Those who are familiar with the area however will tell you that it is a very friendly community, and as such is also a pleasant place to live.
The area has the Palolo Chinese Home for seniors as well as a Zen Buddhist Center. Locals can shop at any one of the several small supermarkets in the area, although there are also several larger shopping centers, eateries and service providers nearby. You will find gas stations, grocery stores, and a number of eateries to suit every price range all along Waialae. If you enjoy hiking there is a trail at one side of the neighborhood leading to Ka'au Crater and a waterfall, which is wildly popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Palolo District Park provides wide open spaces, basketball courts, and a children's playground; it also hosts Summer Fun Programs every year for young residents to enjoy during their school holidays.
