Makena Beach State Park is originally called the Oneloa. In the Hawaiian language, Oneloa means long sand. The local people call it Oneloa because it consists of a long stretch of golden beach. There is no hotel or resort along the Makena Beach. The citizens of Maui have taken many efforts to keep the Makena Beach in original condition. If you visit the beach now, you will find that there are a lot of jungles in the surrounding area. There is also a lack of facilities at the beach park.
Makena Beach State Park is very popular tourist destination in Maui because it has three beaches. It covers an area of 165 acres on the southern shore of Wailea. The three beaches that are located in the park include Big Beach, Pu’u Ola’I Beach and One’uli Beach. Big Beach is a long white sand beach that measures about 1.5 miles long. If you are looking for a beach to stroll with your partner, the Big Beach will fit your needs. Pu’u Ola’I beach is located near to the Pu’u Olai hill. You can reach the Pu’u Ola’I beach by following a trail from the Big Beach. The One’uli Beach is situated in the northern region of Pu’u Ola’i.
Many local people call it the Black Sand Beach because of the dark color of the sand. The Black Sand Beach did not get as many visits as the other two beaches. Hence, it is often isolated. If you want to have a peace of mind, you can visit the Black Sand Beach. You can visit the three beaches to carry out snorkeling and diving activities. The Big Beach offers the best snorkeling spot compare to other areas. If you want to swim at the Big Beach, you have to be careful because of the powerful shore break. The powerful shore break at the Big Beach can cause injuries to the spine and bone of the swimmers. If you happen to be at the Makena Beach State Park, you should visit the Pu’u Ola’i volcano. The Pu’ u Ola’i volcano is about 360 feet high. Beneath the volcano, there are lots of lava rocks.
Makena Beach State Park is open from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. No entrance fee will be charged on the visitors. Various types of facilities can be found at the state park including restrooms, trashcans and etc.
