Paia started as a plantation town, for growing cane and pineapples. Now, it is a relaxed and laid-back town, with a beach community, which offers galleries, coffee houses, antiques, surf shops, ethnic restaurants, and a Fish Market. The most popular activity is surfing. The biggest waves are in Paia, and it is called the Windsurfing capital of the world (Hookipa Beach Park).
