Many years ago, the area has many farm sites. Hundreds of agricultural terraces are built to support the local residents. Previously, the Kipahulu town is known as a moku. Moku is a Hawaiian term used to describe old land district. Research shows that more than 700 archaeological features have been located. Some of the archaeological features in Kipahulu include stonewalls, stone mounds and etc. Today, Kipahulu has a vibrant residential community. Haleakala National Park does not belong to the National Park System in 1960. In 1960, the Haleakala National Park only houses the Haleakala Crater.
