Nawiliwili is Kauai's main port and is known to accommodate extremely large barge, tanker and cruise ships. This harbor was established in the 1930s and was named for the trees that surround the area. Just beyond the main harbor you will find the small boat harbor, which is where hundreds of people dock their private boats waiting to use them.
Close to the harbor you will find the Niumalu Beach Park which covers three acres and has a multitude of picnic tables, showers and restrooms. Many people choose to camp here and then sailboard or kayak up the river during the daytime hours. The Huleia river is also a popular kayaking destination and contains a National Wildlife Refuge.
The final thing of interest is the Alekoko Fishpond, which is located near the wildlife refuge on Hulemalu Road, which is about half a mile inland. The fishpond is home to many species of fish, and people of all ages love to either feed the fish or watch them in their natural environment.
Those who visit Hawaii are often conflicted on just what they should choose to visit since there are so many sites to take in plus multiple islands, a choice must be made because not many people can afford to visit them all. However, when making your itinerary, consider putting Nawiliwili on your list. This is a location that is near the town of Lihue, and is located in the southern end of the Kauai, the oldest island in Hawaii.
Nawiliwili is home to the port and harbor that many cruise ships dock. In addition, it was featured in the movie, 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. This is the main attraction in Nawiliwili, however it is a breathtaking view as it provides those that stop a beautiful view of the entire area. The Kalapaki Beach, which is nearby offers yet another scenic location, as well as the Niumalu Beach.
For those that stop in Nawiliwili, a short distance ahead is the town of Lihue. Since most people will be traveling in the direction of Nawiliwili, it makes sense to stop and get the most out of your vacation. Though, this location is seldom included in brochures as one of the must see places while visiting Hawaii, it is definitely one that you should experience.
