Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located on the Luluku Road in Kaneohe. Hoomaluhia means peaceful place in the Hawaiian language. The garden covers an area of 400 acres of rare plants that are endangered in Hawaii. The park also has a network of trails for visitors to explore the region. There is a 32-acre lake in the park. Visitors are not allowed to swim in the lake because it is dirty. Boating is not allowed in the lake as well. Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden is open from 9 a.m. in the morning to 4 p.m. in the evening. People who are coming to the garden on Friday, Saturday and Sunday should obtain car passes from the Visitor Center. If you have car pass, you can enter the garden in between 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
The plants exhibited in the Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden are from Polynesia islands such as Hawaii, Sri Lanka and Tropical America. There are also many local Hawaiian plants in the garden. Besides, you will be able to observe Heliconia, palms and aroids plants in the garden. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers originally established the garden. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set up the garden with the purpose to protect the Kane’ohe region from flood. If you want to visit the garden, make sure you go to the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center offers information on the special events and programme that are being organized at the garden. You can also obtain hiking permit from the Visitor Center. Some of the things you can bring when visiting the botanical garden include hibachi, fuel, food, cooking equipment, flashlight, personal item, tent and etc. When exploring the plants, you should not attempt to eat its fruit, as it can be poisonous.
Tourists who want to go picnicking can lay down a towel nearby to the Visitor Center. You don’t need to obtain any permit. There is a campground in the botanical garden. If you camp in the area, you must set up a freestanding tent. The tent should not be tied to any structure. When camping, you can build fire in the place that is designated as fireplace. You can also build fire on grills and fire pads. After you have built the fire on the grill, you should leave the ashes.
You can reach the Hoomaluhia botanical garden by taking the Pali Highway. After you take the Pali Highway, you should turn into the Kamehameha Highway. You should keep on going north until you reach the Luluku Road. After you turn left into the Luluku Road, you should see signs that lead you to the botanical garden. The cost of admission into the botanical garden is free of charge.
