Kaimuki is one of the oldest communities in Oahu, with many of the area's properties being over 100 years old, and many homes owned by families going back several generations. The area has several single family houses, many of which are approximately 5,000 square feet. Most of the homes in Kaimuki rest close together on green, tree lined streets. The commercial areas are in a separate district, in particular on Kapahulu and Waialae Avenues. This means that locals can make the most of having restaurants and services located conveniently close by without ever experiencing any of the noise associated with running such businesses.
Both of the main streets have a number of eateries that serve a variety of local and ethnic foods, and come in a very diverse price range - there are also older venues such as the Rainbow Drive Inn which has been frequented by locals for several generations. Besides the ethnically diverse stores and restaurants the line the streets, there are also a number of businesses such as the Avenue Shops at Safeway Center and Market City Shopping Center to be experienced, as well as the biggest Safeway in all of Hawaii. Community parks also abound and most have their own basketball courts and open green spaces ideal for other ball games, picnics or large get togethers. The Kaimuki school district is made up of seven elementary schools, Jarrett and Washington Middle Schools, as well as Kaimuki High School.
