Poolenalena Beach in Maui

Poolenalena Beach is situated to the north of Makena in the southern area of Maui. In the Hawaiian language, the term Poolenalena refers to yellow head. It is called yellow head because of a large rock that exists in the nearby region. The large rock called yellow head is situated at the fifth hole in the Wailea Blue Golf Course. The special feature of the rock is that it has yellow streaks. If you observe the rock closely, you will be able to see the yellow streaks on the sides of the rock. You can observe the yellow head rock from a public road. If you want to observe it closely, you can enter into the golf course. The yellow head rock is a landmark for people who live in Makena.

The beach is about half mile long. The bottom of the beach is sandy and slightly sloped. Poolenalena Beach offers great snorkeling opportunities. The beach is about 730 yard long. The beach has two sections including northern section and southern section. The southern section of the beach is situated at the Makena Surf Condos. It is a great site for boogie boarding. Nearby the beach, there is a trail. If you walk on the trail, you will reach the northern section. The ocean at the northern and southern sections is often calm so it is suitable for performing snorkeling activities. At the shoreline of Poolenalena Beach, there are a few rocks. Kiawe trees can also be seen inland. If you want to swim in the water, you should check with the wave conditions.

Poolenalena Beach is suitable for people who want to go for family outings. You will be able to carry out all kinds of activities at Poolenalena Beach including sunbath, boogie board, and bodysurf. You won’t find any amenity in this area. There are only a few portable bathrooms. You can reach Poolenalena Beach by taking the Piilani Highway 31. You will see Piilani Highway 31 upon entering Kihei. As you travel on the Piilani Highway 31, you will reach Wailea. After you reach Wailea, you should proceed to drive down the hill and turn into the left junction. After you turn into the left junction, you should go to Wailea. After you past Wailea, you will see the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course. If you proceed further, you will see the parking are on the right side.

Lahaina Town Travel Guide

Lahaina town is located on the sunny south Maui. Because it faces the west coast, many beaches can be found within the proximity. The shore of the beaches at Lahaina is sheltered from the trade winds that are traveling from the northeast region. If you visit the Lahaina Beach, you can rent kayak and row to the offshore islands. There are many offshore islands at Lahaina Beach including Kahoolawe. From the beach, you can get a good view of the Molokai Island and Lanai Island. The Kapalua Resort is quite famous in Lahaina. It offers all kinds of accommodations including tennis courts, golf clubs and etc. Lahaina is filled with tourism attraction sites. The most famous street in Lahaina is the Front Street. The Front Street looks different than during the whaling days. The street has many restaurants, picture galleries and shops. In the past, the street is known for its lewd behavior. The Banyan tree is a popular sight in the heart of Lahaina. The Banyan tree is planted in a 2/3 acre of land. It is about 50 feet tall. The trunk is about 0.25 mile thick. There are more than 10 trunks anchoring around the Banyan tree. Originally, the tree was imported from India. When it arrived in Lahaina, the tree is only 8 feet tall. The sheriff that worked for the Lahaina town planted the Banyan Street to celebrate the Christian mission for the 50th anniversary. It offers shades for people. Many events and shows have been organized under the Banyan tree. If you observe the tree, you will notice that many roots are hanging on the branches. The roots grow up from the ground to provide additional support for the tree. The Banyan tree is a landmark of the community in Lahaina. It also plays an important role in the history of Lahaina. King Kamehameha III has celebrated his birthday under the Banyan tree.

Other tourist attraction places in Lahaina include Baldwin House, courthouse, and etc. Almost all the parking lots in Lahaina require parking fees. Therefore, you must prepare some money if you want to park at one of the parking lots. Lahaina is always crowded with visitors. There are several types of amenities in Lahaina including shops, restaurants and etc. There are two luaus in Lahaina including Ulalena Luau and Old Lahaina Luau.

Kihei Travel Guide

Kihei used to be a bustling fishing port town on the west coast of Maui. Kihei is well known for the three Kamaole beach parks. The three Kamaole beach parks are Kamaole Beach Park I, Kamaole Beach Park II and Kamaole Beach Park III. These three beach parks are popular family destinations. You can carry out all kinds of water activities in Kihei including snorkeling, and swimming. It is safe to swim at the beach because there are many lifeguards. The Kamaole beaches are not better than the Waikiki Beach. However, it receives a significant amount of visitors. The Kalama Park is situated in the middle of Kihei. Although the park has a small beach, you will enjoy your vacation there. At the Kalama Park, there is a large grassy field equipped with facilities such as picnic tables, tennis courts and baseball courts. Besides the Kalama Beach, there are also other beaches, which you can visit to carry out wind surfing activities in the afternoon.

Maalaea is situated about 2 miles from the town of Kihei. It is a three miles long beach. You can watch people rowing canoe in the water. It offers a good beach atmosphere. From the beach, you can get a good view of West Maui. Additionally, you can visit the crescent shaped beach in the upmarket Wailea resort. There is a paved walkway at the beach in Grand Wailea resorts. The beaches are sheltered so they offer good swimming and snorkeling spots. About 2 miles south from Wailea is the Makena Beach. Makena Beach has two beaches including Big Beach and Little Beach. Big Beach has a long white sandy coastline while the small beach is where the nude bathers go. The small cove on the south of Makena is a popular site for wedding ceremony. The wedding ceremony is usually held in between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

There are 10 shopping malls in the Kihea town. The shopping malls in Kihei have varying sizes. The biggest shopping center in Kihei is Azeka Place. The shopping mall has more than 50 shops and restaurants. A new shopping center called Piilani Village Shopping Center has been opened. The shopping center covers an area of 150,000 square foot. There is also a large Hattie store and blockbuster video store at Kihei. Most of the visitors will prefer to cook their meals at their own rented condominiums. If you don’t want to cook yourself, you can dine out at the restaurants in Kihei. The food is moderately priced so it should be affordable.

Tourist Information on Ke’e Beach in Kauai

Ke’e Beach is part of the Ke’e Beach Park in Kauai. It is a popular beach with reddish golden sand. Various types of trees can be found at the beach including coconut palm tree, guava trees and etc. Most people visit Ke’e Beach because of the clear water. The clear water at Kee Beach makes it one of the best snorkeling spot. The beach is reef protected so the water always stays calm. If you dive under the water, you will be able to see all kinds of fishes including butterfly fish, wrasses, and goatfish. There are also other kinds of fishes at the beach. The beach has a sandy bottom so it is suitable for family.

Ke’e Beach is situated at the end of Highway 560. It is one of the most visited beaches in Kauai. Nearby the beach, there is a trail called Kalalau Trail. Kalalau Trail is situated at the west of the beach. Many movies have been filmed at this beach. The beach is perfect snorkeling spot for people who want to explore the underwater fishes. On the left side of Kee Beach, there is an opening called Puka Ulua. You should avoid carrying out swimming activity at Puka Ulua because there is a strong current. The current can sweep you to the deeper part of the ocean. In addition, there will be no lifeguard to oversee you. Ha’ena is located within a short distance from Ke’e Beach.

If you want to get an overview of Na Pali Coast, you can go to Ha’ena. From Ha’ena, you can keep on walking until you reach Limahuli Stream. At Limahuli Stream, you will find the Taylor Camp. Taylor Camp used to be the site where the hippie colony stayed. The brother of an actress called Elizabeth Taylor established the hippy colony. At that time, there are more than 100 residents in the hippy colony. Today, you can no longer see the hippy colony anymore.

On the opposite of Taylor Camp, there is a trail, which you can follow. If you follow the trail, you will come to a religious site called Ka Ulu a Paoa Heiau. The local people dedicated the site to a legendary Lohiau called Paoa. According to the legend, Paoa is a lover of the volcano goddess called Pele. Nearby this area, there is a shrine dedicated to the hula goddess, Laka. The Laka shrine is situated at the back of the heiau.

Tunnels Beach in the North Shore of Kauai

Tunnels Beach is a golden sandy beach situated on the north shore of Kauai. It is called Tunnels Beach because there are many tunnels in the reefs here. The beach stretches over 2 miles. Although the beach has many rocks, many people still like to go there to swim. Tunnels Beach is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Kauai. You will be able to see various types of underwater marine fishes and corals. If you plan to snorkel at Tunnels Beach, you should bring all your snorkeling equipments such as masks and finds.

Tunnels Beach is famous for the large reef area. The reefs have two sections including inner reef and outer reef. The reef has a half moon shape. The water in the inner reef is shallow. Because the water in the inner reef is shallow, it is suitable for visitors to carry out snorkeling activities. You can let your kids dive and snorkel in the shallow water. If you have advanced snorkeling skills, you can go snorkeling at the outer reef. The outer reef has many lava tubes and arches. In the winter, the water at Tunnels Beach will have high waves. The water condition at the beach is hazardous. If you want to surf, you should visit the beach during winter.

Tunnels Beach is also a surfing and windsurfing spot. The Tunnels surf break is quite popular at this beach. Skilled surfers can surf at the Tunnels surf break. In between the two reefs, there is a channel. The beach is equipped with facilities such as public showers, restrooms and etc. Tourists often visit the beach so you can expect that it will be crowded on weekdays and weekends. After you reach he beach, you will be able to enjoy the Bali Hai scenery. Great white sharks occasionally visit Tunnels Beach. You should be careful and pay attention for dangerous sea creatures when swimming.

If you want to reach Tunnels Beach, you can take the highway that head to Ke’e Beach from Princeville. You should keep on driving until you past Tunnels. After that, you can park at the Heana Beach Park. Tunnels Beach is no suitable for body boarding. The shape of the reefs at Tunnels allows the beach to have nice waves in the winter season. Some of the reefs at the beach are sharp so you should be careful.

Tourist Guide to Secret Beach in Kauai

Secret Beach is a 1.5 miles long soft golden brown beach in Kauai. It is also called Kauapea beach.  It has picturesque scenery so you will surely be able to relax and have an ease of mind here. The water at Secret Beach is subjected to strong currents.  This beach is considered dangerous for swimming because it is not protected from the reef. During the winter, huge waves will be formed and caused the whole beach to be disappeared as water covers up everything. Hence, it is advised that you don’t go swimming at Secret Beach during the winter. Instead, you should just stroll along the beach. If you are an advanced swimmer, you will find it suitable. If you are a novice swimmer, you should stay out of the water. The wave can reach up to 2 feet high during the summer. You can go snorkeling at the beach if you want. There are many beautiful fishes you can view under the water at Secret Beach.

The water condition at Secret Beach is unpredictable. Before you dive into the water, make sure you check with the locals. You can access Secret Beach by hiking a trail located at the end of Kalihiwai Road. The trail is situated approximately 0.5 mile north of Kilauea. It can be difficult to hike down to the beach, as the trail is steep. If you follow the trail on the beach, you will reach the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. If you managed to reach the beach just after the sunrise, you will see a group of dolphins swimming pass by.

If you keep on walking on the coastline trail, you will come to a waterfall. Secret Beach is nicknamed as nude beach by the tourists. Its location is hard to spot so people like to bathe in nude. Although it is called the nude beach, it is illegal to go nude here. The police will frequently patrol at the beach and demand nude people to get dressed. Secret Beach is often more crowded during the summer. In the summer season, you can carry out various kinds of recreational activities such as snorkeling, body boarding, and etc. From the shore of Secret Beach, you can observe the Kilauea Lighthouse and Moku’ae’ae Island. It is not really a hidden beach. However, it can be harder to access the beach. Because it is harder to access, many people prefer to go to other beaches.

Guide to Waimea Canyon in Kauai

Waimea canyon is the deepest and longest canyon in Hawaii. The length of the canyon is 10 miles while the width of the canyon is 1 mile. The depth of the canyon reaches up to 3,500 feet. The canyon was developed a few thousand years ago. It was developed as a result of the overflowing rivers from the summit of Mount Waialeale.

Today, the canyon is housed inside the Kokee’s State Park. Koke’s State Park covers an area of 4,345 acres. There are many trails in Kokee’s State Park, which lead to Waimea Canyon. The total length of the trail is 45 miles. If you are interested in exploring Waimea Canyon, you can hike on the trail. You can explore the canyon on feet or by vehicle. There is no petrol station along the canyon road so you have to make sure that your vehicle has tank is filled up before beginning the journey. Since the road is built on the canyon, you will experience cool temperature when driving on it. The temperature on the high areas of the canyon is about 10 – 15 degrees cooler compare to other places.

You can access Waimea canyon in two ways. You can take Highway 50 and Highway 550 to reach Waimea canyon. Alternatively, you can reach Waimea Canyon by driving pass Waimea and head to Highway 55. If you want to observe the scenery, you should go to the Waimea Canyon Lookout. The Waimea Canyon Lookout is situated in the middle of marker 10 and marker 11 of the Waimea Canyon Road. Besides visiting the Waimea Canyon Lookout point, you can visit other lookout points. There are several lookout points that offer good view of the scenery including Puu Hina Hina Lookout. Puu Hina Hina Lookout can be found in the middle of the marker 13 and marker 14 of the Waimea Canyon Road. When standing at the Puu Hina Hina Lookout, you will observe a white object in a distant. The white object that shape like a ball is the remain of a radar station used during the Cold War.

You should bring your camera when hiking the trail at Waimea canyon. Before attempting to hike the Waimea canyon, be sure to obtain a valid permit. The permit is required when hiking certain area of the trail. If you want to camp at the canyon, you can do so at Kokee campground. You can also rent the Hale Koa Cabin.

What You Should Know about Wailua River

Wailua River used to be known as the Wailua Nui Hoana. Wailua Nui Hoana means sacred spirit in the Hawaiian language. The river is about 3.2 km long. There are two river forks including north fork and south fork. The north fork is located nearby the Wai’ale’ale crater. The river beginning from the north form will flow 12.2 miles east. The south fork is located at the junction of multiple streams. The south fork flows 8.1 miles towards the east. There are many interesting tourist destinations near to the Wailua River. The Halokila Hawaiian Village can be found along the river. Another tourist destination you can visit when traveling along the Wailua River include Secret Falls.

Every year, thousands of people take kayak trips to the Wailua River to explore the surrounding Polynesia region. Wailua River is the only navigable stream in Hawaii. Many kayak rental companies are offering kayak rentals to tourists who want to explore the Wailua River. There are many types of kayaks you can rent at the river including single kayak, double kayak and triple kayak. You don’t need to have experiences in using kayaks. It is easy to paddle the kayak upstream because there is a wind blowing from the inland. Many people participate in boat trips to Fern Grotto. The water skiing recreational activity is quite popular among foreign tourists.

The kayaking trip will last for 5 hours. If you take part in a kayak tour, you will be provided with a catered lunch. The catered lunch will include a variety of food including Kauai Cookies, fruits and etc. Free drinking water will be provided to all the tourists who participated in the boat trip. The paddle of the kayak is made from lightweight aluminum so it is easy to row the kayak. Normally, the kayak tour will depart from the Wailua Marina boat ramp. After the kayak depart from the Wailua Marina boat ramp, you will travel 2 miles up the river.  During the kayaking trip, you will get to see the lush rainforest. The guide will lead the tourists through the rainforest, which was once resided by the royalty of the Hawaiian people. Later, the tourists will get to have a dip at the Secret Falls waterfall. If you plan to swim at the Secret Falls, be sure to bring your swimsuits.  You should bring a few water ready clothes, sunglasses and sport sandals when preparing for the Wailua River kayaking trip.

Guide to Opaekaa Falls in Kauai

Opakaa Falls is a popular roadside attraction in Kauai. The term Opakaa is given to the waterfall because shrimps are often seen rolling down into the base of the waterfall in ancient time. In the Hawaiian language, Opaekaa refers to shrimp while ka’a refers to rolling. Opaekaa Falls is located near to the Kuamo’o Road. When traveling on the Kuamo’o Road, you will see a stopping point for the Opaekaa Falls. The waterfall is about 150 foot tall. In the late morning, the sun will shine against the Opaekaa Falls. If you want to take picture of the Opaekaa Falls, you should visit during the late morning. The waterfall flows throughout the year regardless if there is any rain.

It can be dangerous to venture down to the base of the waterfall. The trail that leads to the base of the waterfall is slippery and muddy. Many television shows such as Wackiest Ship in the Army has featured Opakaa Falls. The beginning point of the trail that leads to the Opakaa Falls is the Wailua River. You have to rent a kayak and launch it at a site near to the Wailua Marina. After that, you can take a kayaking trip about 0.5 miles from the Wailua River. You should keep on rowing the kayak until you reach the Opaekaa Stream. You should keep on rowing the kayak until you reach the end. At the end of the Opaekaa Stream, you can tie the kayak to a post on the riverbank to prevent it from getting flushed away. From here onwards, you have to travel on the trail via foot.

If you follow the trail, you will be able to reach the base of the Opakaa Falls within a few minutes. In the surrounding region of Opakaa Falls, you will observe many jungles. If you want to return, you simply walk back through the trail, which you use to reach the Opakaa Falls. There is a hidden trail located near to the two-mile marker of the guardrail. It is recommended that you don’t use this trail because there is a deep stream you need to cross. The hidden trail is owned by the state. However, it is not maintained. There are two women who take this trail and fall off from the top of the waterfall n 2006. To avoid unfortunate events, it is best that you observe the waterfall by the Kuamo’o Road instead of venturing down to the base.
