Wailua is located north of the Wailua River on the eastern side of the Kauai. This area is mostly residential, and is a great place to live. The upper Wailua is comprised of single family homes and lots that are similar in size and style to many other suburban subdivisions. The lots range in size from ¼ to ½ acre. To get to this neighborhood, you first drive past many ancient Hawaiian sites and waterfalls, which makes for a spectacular view.
The lower part of the Wailua is not residential, but instead is more of a natural park type setting. The park includes over 1000 acres of picnic sites, archeological sites and camping sites along the river. The Wailua river is a sight in itself, being one of the longest on the Island. The river winds slow and twists a lot, and is fed by rainfall on its way to the Pacific Ocean. A great activity is to kayak down the river and explore the several waterfalls that can be found by following the various forks in the river. At the mouth of the river you will find many ancient stones with carvings on them. These carvings tell a story of what the ancient people in the area had to endure when they first arrived.
There are also professional river trip/guides offered. The most popular of these is the Fern Grotto. You start at the base of the river. For 40 minutes, you and your family ride on flat bottom cruise boats up the river until you arrive at this extraordinary natural wonder. You may also run across Wailua Falls, which is one of the most famous waterfalls located in Kauai and it runs directly into the Wailua River.
Another attraction that you might run across is the Opaeka Falls, which you can find by following the north branch of the Wailua River. You can't access these falls directly, but there is a great overlook that offers a great view just a few hundred yards away. These falls flow year round, unlike others on the island that are fed by rain and dry up during dry times. These falls are best viewed mid morning when the sun gives you the best angle possible.
If you've had enough natural beauty for the day, head on over to nearby Kinipopo Shopping Village, Coconut Marketplace and Wailua Shopping Plaza. These three shops offer a variety of merchandise, souvenirs and everything else that you might need to enjoy yourself during your stay.
Meaning two waters, Wailua is located in the Kauai Country. The place is home to 2,083 people, which includes 781 households and 549 families, according to the 2000 census. Based from the United Census Bureau, the census-designated place of Wailua has a total area of 1.4 square miles, where 1.3 square miles is land, and 0.1 square miles is water.
The Wailua Real Estate market is large and is divided into subdivision, namely the Coastal Wailua and inland Wailua. The 1,200 feet tall Nounou Mountain, otherwise known as the Sleeping Giant, divides these two real estate areas.
In inland Wailua, the majority of Real Estate offerings are for residential housings. This area doesn’t really have any commercial area or government facilities. This is why inland Wailua Real Estate market is primarily known as the ‘bedroom community’.
On the other hand, the Coastal Wailau is booming with commercial activity. There are many hotels, and condominiums in the area suitable for travelers, and tourists. Moreover, there are commercial centers for shopping and dining out. Here, you can also access the Wailau River, which is ht only navigable river in the state of Hawaii. Consequently, you’ll find here lots of water activities, such as water skiing, and kayaking. Various tours such as Fern Grotto and Secret Falls are also being offered.
As for the real estate market, the Coastal Wailau both offers residential and condominiums project.
