Located north of Kailua and facing the Windward side of Oahu is the renowned Kaneohe Bay and Kaneohe City. Considered as one of Oahu’s bigger cities, it is home to many elementary schools and the Hawaii Pacific University (located a couple of miles from the Pali highway), and featuring its very own shopping center. A large percentage of the structures here in Kaneohe were built around the year 1960 to 1970, although major renovations and remodelling have been recently in progress in order to breathe new life in Kaneohe’s real estate market.
After the completion of the H3 (Highway 3), many individuals have started to become interested in the real estate market of Kaneohe, especially for those who worked in the far western area. This highway enabled faster travel from the Koolau Mountain Range to Aiea, Honolulu Airport, Pearl Harbor and Salt Lake. And because the city was much more accessible, sales of Kaneohe real estate began to soar at a significant rate.
Kaneohe has over 11,000 housing units available, ranging from family homes to condominiums and townhouses as well. For around $250,000, you can purchase a small condominium unit, although small oceanfront mansions may set you back at a whopping $4 million! And if you really have excess millions to spend, why not get several acres of equestrian-type real estate?
Before buying a property here in Kaneohe, you must first make up your mind as to whether you would like to have a home that is nearby town or one which is closer to the countryside. Kaneohe actually has a large downtown area, and a magnificent countryside at the same time. Located in the northern region just beyond Ahuimanu, you can find rural areas which have that classic Hawaiian ambiance. This place, despite it being on the countryside, is just a 30-minute drive to Downtown Honolulu.
Classic-style single family homes in Kaneohe costs around $700-800k on the average.
Kaneohe’s Koolau Mountains are one of the central attractions of the area, and is virtually visible from almost any point there. The mountains here are filled with lush greens and with sights truly worth mesmerizing in.
Rains are quite frequent in the Windward side of Oahu, and Kaneohe is pretty much the rainiest community you could ever be. The homes here, especially those which are located in the mountain area experience the most amount of rain all year round. This may prove to quite a problem in the long run as both mold and rot will just be around the corner. Despite that, the locals of Kaneohe still feel that living here is pretty much worth it since you get to experience cool weather no matter what time of the year, especially with trade winds regularly blowing in the area.
One of the best reasons to reside here in Kaneohe is its marvellous bay. Despite the absence of surfing spots in Kaneohe Bay, it still remains to be one of the best places for kite surfing, diving and sailing. Once you are done with your ocean adventures, you can always visit any of the three golf courses here to enjoy a relaxing golf game friends or family.
The renovation of the Windward Mall in 2007 helped freshen up the town in a lot ways. Some shopping boutiques were also renovated or remodelled, and also contributed to the transformation of the town to how it was back in its glorious days. You really don’t have to take frequent trips to Honolulu town, as almost you will need and look for can be found here in Kaneohe.
