Kilauea
At the northernmost part of the island is Kilauea. A then edge of a cliff, stands a lighthouse that was used to warn ships that were approaching the island. The lighthouse is around fifty-two feet in height and was first built in 1913. It has not been in service since 1976, but it is a landmark that the public is invited to see. The lighthouse is actually at the end of the Wildlife Refuge Park that is approximately thirty-one acres total. The refugee is great to visit especially now that all the damage that was inflicted upon it when Hurricane Iniki hit has been fixed.
The most beautiful beach in Kauai is Anini beach. The location has several beach cottages that the person can rent, to give them a real beach vacation. However, for those that want these, they better be sure to reserve their cottage in advance since this tend to go fast.
The town itself is rather small and offers a few restaurants. But, the main reason that people visit here is for the beaches. In fact, most people view this as the best place to come for rest and relaxation.
Hanalei
On the north shore of Kauai is Hanalei, which is a small area that only has around five hundred residents that call the place home. It is the entrance to Hanalei Valley, which features many great beaches, Hanalei Bay, great vacation homes, and some fantastic Bed and Breakfast's like the Tutu's Cottage. The main attractions of Hanalei are the museum, the mission house, church, and a few restaurants, but most people are impressed by the small town charm that lies here. The Hanalei Museum was once a small house in the nineteenth century and features local displays that show the local history. The Wailoli Mission House was built in 1841, and is a great way to see how life was over one hundred years ago. The Wai'oli Hui'ia Church is a church that goes back to 1912 and has been in many photographs throughout the world, particularly for its stained glass window arch.
From the village, you can hike to Na Pali coast, or go for the more popular boat or rafting tour that goes along the coast. The Na Pali coast offers some great sunsets and views that the person is not going to forget easily. Along the way to the coast, the person is going to see several caves and they are going to see Haean, which is another older settlement in the area. The Haena area was a popular hippie hangout in the sixties and seventies, however, now most people go there for the beautiful and secluded beaches.
Na Pali Coast
This is the most difficult, but the most beautiful coastline in all of Hawaii to access. The cliffs are around four thousand feet high and are right over the ocean, which is one reason why so many people find this to be the picture perfect location. For those that want to see everything in a hurry, then they should take a helicopter tour. These tours leave from Lihue and Princeville airports. Those that take this are going to notice that the scenery is identical to what was featured on Magnum P.I.
Another way to tour the shoreline is to take a rafting tour. This option is going to give you an up and close personal look that is going to include sea caves, seeing dolphins and swimming. The other option that you can take is to hike the coastline. The hike starts in Haena then goes two miles to Hanakapai Bay. At this time, the person can swim and have a great time in the fresh water, and have an overall great experience.
Hanakoa is a place that is very wet and rainy. Therefore, most people do not continue their hike the extra five miles to reach Koolau Valley. But, if the person does, then they are going to find some great attractions that include awesome waterfalls, and ancient ruins. The whole hike is approximately five miles and is rated at a difficult level.
Beaches
The North Shore beaches of Kauai are those that offer the most since they have great scenery. But for those that are wanting to swim and snorkel, then this is not the area since the waters are strong and high, and are very dangerous.
Hanakapiai
After taking a two-mile hike along the Na Pali coast, the person is going to come across Hanakapiai bay. You are advised not to swim in the area since the currents are strong. However, the fresh water river that crosses the bay into the ocean is safe all the year round to get into.
Hanalei Bay
This is one of the most beautiful bays out there, though, it is only recommended to see not to participate in since the currents are strong and the water is overall dangerous.
Lumahai
This is where the movie 'South Pacific' was shot and a reef, which makes swimming very dangerous, protects the long white sand beach.
Anahola Bay
This is a bay that allows for relatively safe swimming during the summer, though it should not be attempted during the wintertime. This is one of the local favorite beaches to hand out.
