Anyone who has ever visited the island of Hawaii, often wonder what it would be like to live on the island that is full of sun, mountains and beaches with a laid-back atmosphere. Though it sounds like heaven, consider that there are some down sides to packing up and moving to the island. For example, you have to consider that having island fever is possible since Hawaii is not close to anything. However, for those that know this, and you do move there, then you can be sure that you will have a fun and existing life, as well as a high standard of living.
Disadvantages
There is nothing easy about moving to Hawaii. First off, there are not a lot of good jobs, which means that unless you have a job set up you may want to consider moving back to the mainland in case you cannot find employment. Secondly, getting your things to Hawaii is a whole other problem and it is going to be very expensive. Third of all, visiting family that still live in the US is going to require a long flight. And probably the biggest disadvantage is that there is a limited amount of space thus roads may be congested which can give off the island fever feeling.
Moving
There are eight islands in Hawaii, so before you move, make sure to check them all out since they each offer something different. Plus, each island has different employment as well as the cost of living is different on each island. Oahu is considered the busiest island, while Maui and Kauai have far less of a population.
When you do move to the island, consider only brings the necessities and purchasing the rest once you get settled onto the island in order to save on shipping costs. Plus, you should plan on waiting around four weeks in order to get the items that you shipped. You can have your car shipped to the area, which will be needed on the Island since public transportation is sketchy in some areas.
Renting a home is going to cost quite a bit, you can expect to pay $1,200 or more per month. For example, a studio apartment in Oahu will cost around $1,200 per month. For those that are wanting to live in more popular areas such as Waikiki then you can plan on spending around $1,600 on a one bed apartment. Buying a home is just as expensive though, and these prices rise each year. Right now you can expect to pay around $600,000 for a home.
