Big Beach is situated on the south shore of Maui. The beach has a shoreline that is 1100 yards long and 65 yards wide. It is very popular among tourists on Maui. Big Beach is also known as Makena Beach. However, most people prefer to call it Big Beach because it fits this description. Makena Beach has two sections including Big Beach and Small Beach. Big Beach is located on the left while Small Beach is located on the right. Actually, Makena beach located to the north but many people also call Big Beach as Makena Beach. There is a small path that connects Big Beach to Little Beach. Nude sunbathers often visit little Beach. It is one of the beaches in Hawaii that allow nude sunbathing.

To the right of Big Beach, you will find a large hill. The large hill called Pu’u Ola’i is well known for volcano eruption. The volcano eruption is so powerful that the lava explodes out from the water and formed the Pu’u Ola’i hill. Various types of facilities are available including picnic tables, portable toilets, restrooms, and paved parking. There are no fresh drinking water and beach shower. You can carry out all kinds of water sport activities at Big Beach including body boarding, snorkeling and etc. The beach is open until evening, when the gate is locked. Big Beach can experience rip tides occasionally. If you are not sure whether it is safe to enter the water, you should follow the local. You should go to the site where the local go for swimming at the beach. If you stand at Big Beach, you can observe two islands including Molokini and Kaho’olawe.

Big Beach is situated in the Makena State Park so it is more remote compare to other beaches in Maui. It is a popular body-boarding site. Several cases of people getting injured while performing body boarding have been reported in this area. Violent shore break can occur at the beach, especially in the winter. If you are inexperienced in body boarding, you should avoid entering into the water. Now, Big Beach has many lifeguards. The lifeguards will oversee the swimmers and surfers from the lifeguard tower. If you want to come to Big Beach, you should take the Makena Alanui Road. Another way to access the beach is to take the road past marker 4 at the highway in south Maui.
