Kahaluu Beach Park is a very popular Kona Beach. The tourist often refers it as Snorkel Beach. The water of the beach comes from a water spring. Every day, more than 10 million gallons of water feed the beach. The water at the beach is always calm. There are plenty of colorful corals and fishes at Kahaluu Beach. It is estimated that there are more than 100 species of fishes at the beach. Snorkelers can explore the large school of fishes. There are also many green sea turtles at the protected beach. If you want to capture the beautiful scenery, you can use an underwater camera. Many Hawaiian green sea turtles visit the beach. When you are swimming in the shallow water, you will be able to see the green sea turtles.

Snorkelers should swim to the southwest region to get the best view of the corals. You should keep on swimming until there is no more ocean current. The coral reef near the lava rocks is pristine. The underwater life is amazing if you view it from 2 feet of the lava rocks. Tourists usually will stand close to the shore to view the underwater life. However, if you want to have upfront experience, you can dive it and swim along with the fishes. Some of the fishes you can see while snorkeling at Kahaluu Beach are puffer fish, butterfly fish, and etc. Occasionally, you will see fishes in large groups. They group together so that they resemble a big ball of colorful fishes. Snorkelers should not miss the opportunity to visit the Captain Cook reef at Kealakekua Bay. You can also rent kayak and explore the surrounding regions of the Kahaluu Beach.

Kahaluu Beach is also great for surfing activities. The waves will break in starting from the north end. You should always check the conditions of the water before surfing. Many years ago, the beach used to be exposed to the violent riptides. Realizing this, King Kamehameha asked his subordinates to build a seawall so that his family can enjoy the recreational activities at the ocean safely. The cove where the seawall is built is known as Kahaluu Beach Park today. There are many trees providing shades so you can picnic with your family here. To the north of Kahaluu Beach, you will find a sandy entrance.

Kahaluu Beach is a family friendly beach because it has calm water. Because of its popularity, it will often be crowded. You should come early so that there will be parking spots.
