The islands were formed from volcanic rock hundreds of years ago and the hotspot the under the sea that created them is still alive today. The six islands of Hawaii are more than you could ever wish for and more than you could ever see in one lifetime. They are a wonder of nature that are ever-changing. From the lovely fragrant air that wafts through the breezy tropical air to the warm ocean waters, once you visit you will never want to leave.

Let's look at the main island of Hawaii, also called Hawaii or The Big Island. It is the biggest and the youngest. It is the most popular of all the islands which became a part of the United States in 1959, and a person would be hardpressed to find anything that has stayed the same since then. The flora is ever-changing and the fauna is always recreating itself. Imagine living in a beautiful greenhouse where the garden tender just cannot make up his mind what type of bouquet to create so he keeps adding in another fragrant bud after another and each is as wondrous to the nose as the last. There you have the ever-evolving floral landscape of Hawaii.

The waters of The Big Island are warm and rejuvenating. One can literally live on the beach and never miss any of the amenities of the inner island locations. If you should go there and you see someone lounging do not assume they are just visiting. No, it is more likely they are taking in a snooze in what they consider their backyard.

The island is 4028 square miles and has a population of approximately 148,677 inhabitants. That is a lot of room for such a population to spread out. And, there is much else that is spread out on the island. There are various hiking trails, and horse paths along the myriad mountain paths. Some paths, indeed, are so steep you can only travel by horse or foot, that is, no cars allowed.

The main island also blissfully boasts of its warm, friendly population of people. Wind, waves and wings is how things are said to arrive on the island. It is hard to dispute that when you smell the breeze of the mighty tradewinds, you feel the flapping of the ocean waves against your skin and observe all the varieties of colorful, lovely winged creatures that pass you by.

The Big Island of Hawaii is certainly an experience that will stay with you for a long time.
