In the west end of Molokai, there are two places you can visit including Papohaku Beach, Make Horse Beach, Dixie Maru Beach, Mauna Loa and Hale O Lono Harbor. Papohaku Beach has a very long coastline. The white sand beach is about 3.2 km. The beach is about 100 yards wide. In the past, a sand mining operation was carried out at the beach. The constructors in Oahu take the sand from the beach for construction purposes. The only remain of the sand mining industry is a concrete tunnel. The beach has many reefs that are exposed to the ocean. Because it does not have a protective reef, it is not safe to swim at the beach. The large waves can easily reach the shore so it is dangerous for you to walk near the water.
Make Horse Beach is a perfect beach for people who want to carry out recreational activities. If you want to practice surfing, you can come to Make Horse Beach. In Hawaii, the term Make means dead. The beach was given the name because it used to be the site where many horses are massacred. Besides surfing, you can catch fish at the sea. You can bring your fishing gear if you want to fish at the sea. This is the best option for people who don’t want to spend money on food.
Dixie Maru Beach is a clean beach with fine sands. The beach has many brightly colored reefs and corals. You can also explore a variety of seaweeds under the ocean. Tourists are free to perform snorkeling activities at the beach at anytime of the day. Since it is a remote beach, there is usually no lifeguard.
Mauna Loa is approximately 4 km above the sea level. The name Mauna Loa means Long Mountain in the Hawaiian language. It is the largest volcano in the world. The volcano has erupted more than 33 times from 1843 – 1984. The volcano is active and may erupt again in the future. The oldest dated rock found at Mauna Loa is dated to 200,000 years ago. It is estimated that the earliest subarial eruption takes place 400,000 years ago. The first eruption of Mauna Loa is about 1,000,000 years ago.
Tourists can visit the Hale O Lono Harbor to watch the canoe race. The canoe race will emend at the Waikiki Beach in Oahu. The distance between the Hale O Lono Harbor and Waikiki Beach is quite far but many contestants have made it to the destination successfully.
