This is the site where a great massacre occurred in 1790. Captain Simon Metcalfe set out on a sea voyage for a maritime fur trading. Two ships are used to carry out the maritime fur trading business including Eleanora and Fair American. It happened that the Spanish captured the Fair American ship because of the Nootka Crisis. In 1790, the Eleanora ship arrived at the Kealakekua Bay. The chief Kameeuanoku heard about the arrival of the ship and went to welcome them. It appeared that Simon Melcafe had been angry with the chief because of something he did. One day, a small boat that belonged to Melcafe was stolen. At that same night, a watchman was killed. Melcafe was angry so he fired cannon into the village. The people told him that it was the people of Olowalu that had taken the boat. When Melcafe reaches Olowalu, he discovered that the villagers dismantle the boat so that they can take the nails. Nails are treasure to the people because of the lack of smelting technology. Melcafe directed his soldiers to fire the cannon so that 100 Hawaiians were killed.  Eventually, King Kamehameha I took revenge and killed Simon Melcafe’s son, Thomas Melcafe. Simon Melcafe left the island finally.

After the massacre, the site no longer has a thriving community. Olowalu used to be a town where refugee can run for help. In the past, the chiefess Kalola governed the town.
