In the19th century, the sugar industry was booming in Wailuku and it was transformed into a lively town. Since the mid 1800-century, missionaries from New England have introduce Christianity to the region. They also introduce new agricultural methods in the region. In 1860, Wailuku Sugar Company manages most of the sugar plantations. To water the plantations, long ditches were dug. The ditches allow the plantation to be irrigated with the water from the central Maui fields.
