Hendry Baldwin and Samuel Alexander acquired the land from Makawao and converted it into a sugar plantation. After a while, they found out that the water source is located far away from the plantation. The water source is located about 17 miles from Haleakaka so they decided to build irrigation. The irrigation was built in 1876. After the irrigation was built, the sugar plantation flourished. There was a great harvest in the sugar plantation. Seeing the successful result, many merchants decided to purchase the lands and convert them into sugar plantation. With more and more sugar plantations being established, many workers have emigrated from other countries to work there. The Kahului residential community also grows because of the growth in the sugar plantation industry. Later, the Kahului harbor and airport were built at the town.

Kahului is more modern and developed compare to other towns. In Kahului, you will find many large shopping centers that offer merchandise at cheaper price. Some of the large shopping centers in Kahului include Home Depot, Kaahumanu Center, bakeries and fruit stores. The Kahului Shopping Center is situated on the Kaahumanu Avenue. There are several large shopping malls and stores in Kahului. You can also visit the Queen Kaahumanu Center to shop for stuffs. There are hundreds of small shops, restaurants and movie theaters in Kahului. The Mamas Fish Restaurant is one of the most famous restaurants in Kahului. Many type of businesses operate in Kahului.
