Maikiki is known for its strong sense of community, and is situated in the centre of Honolulu - it is comprised largely of older homes and apartment buildings. There is also the Friends of Maikiki Library, another not for profit group, which operates a reading room and learning library purely for the enjoyment of residents of the area; it is a true testament to the value placed on nurturing the tight knit community here. There are many churches here too, of several different denominations; most of which provide either free or very lost cost services including senior classes, student tutoring, discussion and support groups, as well as community activities such as board games, sports and hiking. The Maikiki Shopping village also gives locals easy access to plenty of laid back eating venues, a video store, bottle shop and a small grocer. Schools here are a part of the Roosevelt district, and the prestigious private Punahou School can also be found here.
