Hanalei is a district, lookout, valley, bay, beach and town that all go by the same name. It is located along the North Shore of Kauai. The valley is surrounded by large mountains and bluffs on all sides, this mountain range is one mile wide and six miles long. Inside of the valley you will find the communities of Princeville, Hanalei and Kilauea. You may also notice Hanalei Bay, which is famous for the beauty if offers. The beaches are very white and sandy, and pristine, being a half mile long.
The small village town of Hanalei stretches only several hundred yard along Highway 56. If you blink while driving, you may miss it! The main town activity takes place where the two shopping centers face each other on either side of the highway. On the mountainside of the town, you may find several buildings including a converted school, surf shop, some restaurants, a snack bar as well as some clothing and gift stores. The second area that you will encounter is the ocean side of the village. Here you will find a supermarket, surf shop and outdoor specialty shop. Many people flock to this town because of it's peaceful and quiet atmosphere.
Hanalei Town is an undeveloped town in Kauai. The main feature of the Hanalei Town is the green valleys and mountains. It is located about 2 minutes drive from the Princeville. There is a variety of facilities at Hanalei Town including tennis club, golf club and etc. The historic Hanalei town can be found in this town. The Hanalei Bridge used to be known as the gateway to Hanalei. The truss bridge was first developed during the 1912. It is one of the earliest bridges to be built in the north Hawaii. There are 7 bridges on the north shore of Hawaii. When crossing the Hanalei Bridge, you can look to the left and right to observe the surrounding scenery. As you cross the Hanalei Bridge, you can watch the water birds at the nearby taro fields. On the left side of the bridge, you can see the Ohiki Road.
Besides the water birds, there are various types of native birds you can observe from the bridge. Several types of native birds can be observed at the taro fields including black-necked stilt, and coot. Occasionally, you will see the moorhen and nene in the taro fields. The nee is a Hawaiian goose. The Haraguchi Rice Mill is located in a short distance from the Ohiki Road. The rice mill was built in 1930. It was damaged in the past but it has been restored to the original conditions now. There are tours, which you can participate to explore the Haraguchi Rice Mill.
As you travel along the road, you can watch the mountains. There are lots of taro fields in Hanalei Town. In the Hanalei Valley, you will find many taro fields. The local people grow the taro because it is their foods. The taro is the staple diet of the Hawaiian people in Hanalei Town. Although the town is remote, you will still find some shops here. The Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant can be found in the Hanalei town. The restaurant offers a variety of food. There is a bicycle rental shop that offers all kinds of bicycles for rentals. John Sargent operates the Bike Doktor shop. The Coldwell Banker Bali Hali Realty and Quicksilver surf shop can be found at the town as well. There is a post office called Hanalei post office where you can mail parcels and letters to friends. Near the post office, there is a large soccer field.
