The small village was eventually developed into the Lihue town. The town of Lihue is situated within the proximity of Puna. Puna used to be inhabited by the German people. During the 1800s, the German people moved to the Lihue town and settle down there. After the German people relocated to Lihue, they built the Lutheran church. The German moved to Lihue after the sugar plantation in their original town has been closed down. In 2000, they closed down the sugar plantation. After the sugar plantation is closed down, they burned off the sugar canes to generate electricity. Today, the areas where the sugar plantation used to occupy have been converted into real estate community.
