Even though home insurance is not mandatory, most home owners are considering it seriously, and they really should. Everywhere in the world, accidents, natural calamities, fires and even thefts affect people, and it would really be much safer to get some kind of protection against such unfortunate events. No one likes to think about it, but it really could happen't you, and if it does, you will most certainly want to know you can rebuild your home or recover your valuables.
A good insurance policy would cover its owner in most cases, but before purchasing a home insurance policy you need to make a thorough research and read carefully the entire contract before signing it. What you should be most careful to check are the insurance exclusions some insurance companies may impose.
Insurance policies have different terms and conditions, depending on each policy owner's preferences and financial possibilities, but most insurance companies include exclusions which they don't inform the clients thoroughly on. That is why it is important to read the contract, as it usually contains several conditions you wouldn't really agree with, and they are usually written in small print and overlooked when talking about the insurance policy.
One thing that you should know is that most insurance policies do not cover environmental factors such as hurricanes or floods; so, if you live in an area that is at higher risk of flooding, you may not find an insurer willing to give you an insurance policy, or you could find someone to give you a policy that doesn't cover that particular liability.
Accidental damage is usually covered by insurance policies, but there are also exceptions. For example, if the damage was caused by a domestic animal, it is usually not covered by the policy. Wear and tear is also something that is on the insurance companies exclusion list; the basic idea is that everything is work and breaks down eventually, and if wear and teas were accepted, the insurance companies would be constantly flooded with claims. So, if your property was damaged by a dog or one of your valuables simply broke down, you cannot expect to make a claim, as that won't be accepted by the insurance company.
An important aspect of home insurance policies is the excess. The amount depends on the insurance company, but they all have an excess amount, and that is an important exclusion, because that excess amount is deducted from your claim and you will have to pay it. So, when purchasing an insurance policy, you should bear that in mind and enquire about the excess limit and its application, because in this way you will be able to avoid unpleasant surprises.
